When planning a destination wedding in France, the setting is already breathtaking. But your wedding decoration brings the magic to life and makes the day truly yours. Whether you’re envisioning a romantic chateau celebration, a vineyard elopement, or a countryside gathering, the right decor creates the ambiance your guests will remember forever.

As a high-end wedding planner based in France, I’ve helped couples from the UK, US, and other countries bring their vision to life — always with a blend of elegance, intentionality, and feasibility. Here’s how to approach your wedding decoration without stress and with a result that feels perfectly you.

Spoiler: it doesn’t have to be big!

Start with a Moodboard (or Let a Scenographer Help)

Before diving into florals, fabrics, or furniture, step one is defining your vision. A moodboard helps translate your style into a visual language — colors, textures, emotions.

  • Use Pinterest or Canva to gather inspiration, but don’t get stuck there.
  • Limit yourself to 10-15 core images that feel cohesive.
  • Include key words like “romantic vineyard,” “editorial elegance,” or “minimalistic.”

Not confident putting it all together? A scenographer or wedding designer can support you. They will interpret your ideas and create a coherent, realistic decorative concept — one that aligns with your venue, season, and budget.

I can offer you this solution!

Avoid the Pinterest Trap

Pinterest is a powerful tool… but it can also be misleading.

  • Many images feature staged editorials with unlimited budgets and no timeline pressure.
  • That 6-meter floral arch? It might cost 3,000 euros and collapse under summer heat.
  • That stunning table setup? It might not fit your venue’s layout or guest flow.

Instead of copying, use Pinterest as a jumping-off point. Ask your planner or stylist what’s doable within your budget and venue constraints. The best weddings aren’t the most extravagant — they’re the most thoughtful and true to you.

Yes to DIY — But in Moderation

Feeling crafty? DIY decoration can add personal touches — but be careful not to take on too much.

What you can DIY:

  • Handwritten place cards or table numbers
  • Welcome signs (printed or handwritten)
  • Guest favors (jars of local honey, mini olive oil bottles, etc.)

What to avoid:

  • Large-scale installations
  • Floral arrangements (leave this to a professional, especially in warm weather)
  • Anything that needs assembling the day before

Remember: You’re getting married. You shouldn’t be up at midnight with a glue gun!

Share Every Decor Idea With Your Planner

Your wedding planner is your best ally when it comes to decoration. Even if you plan to manage the decor yourself or hire an external stylist, your planner needs to know:

  • What’s arriving, when, and with whom
  • What’s rented vs. what’s owned
  • Who’s setting up and dismantling (we take care of it most of the time)
  • Where each element should go (make a layout if possible, we can help you with it)

Planners can help you avoid mistakes, troubleshoot logistics, and streamline your vision. At Memorii Events, I love diving into every little detail with my couples — whether it’s choosing table linens, creating a floor plan, or coordinating a late-night sparkle exit.

Think Experience, Not Just Aesthetics

The most memorable weddings are those where the decor supports the experience. Ask yourself:

  • Will guests feel welcomed and comfortable?
  • Does the setup match the flow of the day?
  • Will everything hold up over time and weather?

A beautiful space is important, but what makes it magical is how it feels to be there. That’s where thoughtful, curated decoration makes all the difference.

Personally I love to think about it like a Game Designer.

Inspiration from Real Weddings

At a recent chateau wedding near Bordeaux, my couple envisioned “editorial simplicity.” We created a refined look with neutral florals with a small color accent, gold candleholders, beige linen — all chosen to reflect the calm, romantic atmosphere of the day. With a beautiful green and beige stationery.
